About being an Amina Volunteer

Amina – Help us help women after rape or abuse

The Amina Scheme is currently full and we are unable to accept new volunteer applications at this time

The Amina scheme is a peer support scheme for women who have experienced rape, sexual assault or sexual abuse at anytime in their life.

The scheme trains women who have experienced sexual violence to provide support to other women with similar experiences. Each pair meets regularly (once a week) to discuss the effects of sexual violence, share information and have a chat to help women feel less isolated after their experiences of sexual violence and abuse.

We are looking for female volunteers who:

  • Are over the age of 18;
  • Live in London;
  • Have experienced sexual violence at any time in their lives;
  • Are ready and able to help others dealing with sexual violence;
  • Are willing to undergo around 40 hours of training;
  • Can spare around two to four hours a week;
  • Can commit to the scheme for a year after training.

We particularly welcome applications from disabled, black, asian, minority ethnic and refugee women. All volunteers must be willing to undergo an enhanced level Disclosure and Barring Service check (formerly Criminal Records Bureau check). Women who have unspent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 are eligible to apply for the scheme and may be able to volunteer.
